About this tour

This mountaineering course is designed for anyone who wants to gain a safe and well-founded introduction to high-alpine mountaineering. In a small group of no more than four participants, you will learn the essential skills step by step, with plenty of time for individual questions – from knot tying and crevasse rescue to tour planning.

Depending on your interests and any previous experience, we can set different priorities. If you would like to focus more intensively on travelling and securing yourself on glaciers, we will dedicate additional time to these techniques. If your main interest lies in rocky terrain or easy ridges, the course can be tailored accordingly.

We will work through all of this together, true to the motto: climb together, learn together. The Warnsdorfer Hütte provides the ideal setting, with comfortable accommodation, excellent food, short approaches and varied training terrain close to the hut.

Itinerary

We meet in Krimml and travel together by hut taxi through the long Krimmler Achental valley. From the head of the valley, it takes us around one hour to hike up to the Warnsdorfer Hütte. Once we arrive, we settle into our rooms and discuss the schedule and main focus of the course. We usually begin straight away with the fundamentals of knot tying, abseiling, and belaying with the clove hitch and Munter hitch.

Over the following two days, the course covers a range of topics, including:

Travelling across snow-covered and bare glacier terrain

Self-rescue and companion rescue after a crevasse fall

Crossing marginal crevasses and bergschrunds

Rope-team techniques on snow slopes

Rope-team techniques on ridges

Protection and belaying techniques on ice and snow

Protection and belaying techniques on rock

First aid in the mountains

Tour planning

and much more

We approach each topic through a combination of theory and practical training. The techniques are introduced step by step, practised extensively in real mountain terrain and, whenever conditions allow, applied during a guided training tour.

Requirements

For this mountaineering course, you should be sure-footed and have some experience with hiking and easy mountain tours. You should also have a solid level of fitness for spending a full day in the mountains. No previous experience with rope or belaying techniques, or with using crampons, is required – you will learn all of this step by step during the course.
