Frequently asked questions from my guests

What happens if I need to cancel my tour?

Please note that a tour becomes binding once both parties have confirmed it. In the event of a cancellation at short notice, I reserve the right to charge a percentage of the guiding fee as a cancellation fee. You can find detailed information in my cancellation policy. Payment is usually made by invoice after the tour.

What happens if the weather does not cooperate?

Together, we will find an alternative in another region or postpone the tour. There are no additional costs for you in this case.

Is rental equipment available?

Yes, I can provide the technical equipment you need, such as a climbing harness, helmet, crampons or avalanche safety equipment. The relevant tour description and equipment lists explain exactly what is required and what you may need to bring yourself. If you are unsure what you need, simply get in touch – I will be happy to advise you.

Do I need previous experience for a tour with a mountain guide?

No, previous experience is not always necessary. Many tours are suitable for beginners.

My programme is divided into three difficulty levels to help you quickly identify a suitable tour:

Easy – For beginners with little or no experience in the respective mountain sport.

Intermediate – For experienced mountaineers and athletic beginners.

Difficult – Specialist tours that require a high level of experience, fitness and personal responsibility.

This gives you guidance from the outset, whatever your starting level.

How many participants can one mountain guide take?

That depends on the type and difficulty of the tour. For ice and rock climbing, difficult alpine tours involving ridge climbing or steep snow slopes, I can take only one or a maximum of two guests. For ski tours and ski mountaineering tours, groups of 4 to 6 people are possible, depending on the difficulty. If you would like to do a particular tour with more participants, I can arrange another mountain guide.

How is the price of a tour determined?

My tour prices are based on the recommended daily rate of the Austrian Mountain Guides Association (VÖBS) and customary local rates. They vary according to the difficulty of the tour and the number of participants.

What should I do if I am not sure whether a tour is right for me?

If you are unsure, please get in touch! During a short phone call, we can work out together whether a tour is suitable for you, both in terms of fitness and experience. This creates the best basis for a safe and successful mountain experience.

What does “state-certified mountain and ski guide” mean?

A state-certified mountain and ski guide holds the highest level of training in mountain sports. This is the only mountain guiding qualification that authorises guides to lead guests safely worldwide, in all mountain sports disciplines, at all difficulty levels and at any time of year, in both summer and winter.

What is the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA)?

The International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA), known in German as Internationale Vereinigung der Bergführerverbände (IVBV), in French as Union Internationale des Associations de Guides de Montagne (UIAGM) and in Italian as Unione Internazionale delle Associazioni di Guide di Montagna (UIAGM), is a federation of national mountain guiding associations founded in 1965. It promotes international exchange and the joint development of the profession.

Major European members include Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy and Germany. Countries such as the USA, Canada, Chile and Japan are also part of the organisation.

The IFMGA’s main tasks are to ensure the highest standards in mountain guide training and continuing education, promote exchange between member nations, and advance the development of mountain guiding worldwide.
