About this tour
At 3666 metres, the Großvenediger is one of Austria’s highest mountains and stands among the mighty peaks of the Hohe Tauern. It is a must for every mountaineer and deserves a place in every tour book. Several routes lead to the summit, but in my opinion, the north ridge is the most beautiful. The route follows the ridge over a series of ascents and descents, with enjoyable climbing all the way to the summit. Large sections of the tour cross the Obersulzbachkees, one of Austria’s last major glaciers. The ridge itself offers blocky climbing with several challenging passages. This tour combines everything that makes high-altitude mountaineering so rewarding. We spend the night at the Kürsinger Hut, which we approach from Neukirchen am Großvenediger.
Itinerary
On the first day, we meet at the car park in Neukirchen am Großvenediger and take a mountain taxi into the Sulzbachtal Valley. We complete the final 500 vertical metres on foot before reaching the Kürsinger Hut, where we spend the night. Early the following morning, we set off towards the north ridge of the Großvenediger. After crossing the Obersulzbachkees glacier, we climb towards the ridge. Once on the ridge, easier and more demanding climbing sections alternate until we finally reach the summit. Shortly before the summit, we encounter the “Böse Platte”, the key section of the route. The descent follows the glaciated normal route back to the Kürsinger Hut. After a well-earned break and the descent into the valley, the taxi takes us back to Neukirchen.
