About this tour

Climbing South Tyrol’s highest mountain via the Ortler Hintergrat with a mountain guide is an alpine highlight for advanced mountaineers. At 3905 metres, the Ortler is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Eastern Alps, while the elegant Hintergrat is one of the region’s best-known and most scenic ridges. The long and varied descent via the Ortler normal route, passing the Payer Hut on the way back to Sulden, completes the tour. Excellent fitness, sure-footedness and experience in easy rock climbing are required. The Hintergrat offers exposed passages, varied climbing and a panorama that is difficult to match anywhere in the Eastern Alps. With me as your mountain guide, climbing the Ortler becomes a safe and impressive experience. The traverse combines exciting ridge climbing, spectacular glacier terrain and the unforgettable feeling of standing on the highest summit in South Tyrol.

Itinerary

On the first day, we travel to Sulden and approach the Hintergrat Hut, which serves as our base for the ascent. On the second day, we climb the spectacular Hintergrat to the summit of the Ortler. We then descend via the normal route, stopping for lunch at the Payer Hut before continuing past the Tabaretta Hut and returning to Sulden.

Requirements

For the traverse of the Ortler, you need a very good level of fitness, as the tour can take up to 12 hours.

The tour involves around 1400 vertical metres of ascent and 2100 vertical metres of descent. You must be confident climbing lower UIAA grade III, including while wearing crampons.
