About this tour
Climbing Austria’s highest mountain via the Großglockner normal route with a mountain guide is an unforgettable experience for anyone looking for a genuine alpine adventure with professional support. The tour is suitable for fit beginners with good stamina and sure-footedness. Previous experience using crampons or climbing easy rock can be helpful but is not essential. With a certified mountain guide by your side, the dream of standing on the 3798-metre summit of the Großglockner can become a safe and impressive reality. What makes this tour particularly rewarding is its combination of glacier travel, easy ridge climbing and the breathtaking panorama from Austria’s highest summit.
Itinerary
The ascent of the Großglockner via the normal route takes place over two days. On the first day, you independently hike to the Stüdel Hut at 2801 metres, where the group meets the mountain guide in the evening. After dinner and an equipment check, we set off early the following morning. The route crosses the Ködnitzkees glacier and leads to the Erzherzog-Johann Hut, better known as the Adlersruhe, at 3454 metres—the highest mountain refuge in Austria. After a short break, we continue across the Eisleitl, a short fixed-rope section and the Glocknerleitl. Easy climbing then takes us across the Kleinglockner. An exposed descent into the Glocknerscharte marks the beginning of the final ascent to the summit of the Großglockner. We descend along the same route to the Adlersruhe, which is the perfect place for a break with coffee and cake. We then return to the Stüdel Hut, where we say goodbye to the mountain guide. From there, you descend independently into the valley.
