Overview
The Große Fermeda is a magnificent climbing tour in the heart of the Dolomites. Located in Val Gardena above the Col Raiser cable car, it is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Odle Group. The normal route covers more than 700 vertical metres of climbing through classic Dolomite terrain, with continuous climbing at UIAA grades II to III. The descent follows the ascent route and involves a combination of downclimbing and abseiling. Climbing the Große Fermeda is therefore a long and rewarding day in the mountains. Thanks to its south-facing aspect, the route usually offers excellent conditions throughout the summer and often well into autumn. Taking the Col Raiser cable car makes the approach considerably shorter and easier.

Tour Programme
We start early at the Col Raiser cable-car station and enjoy a comfortable ride up to Col Raiser. From there, it takes around 45 minutes to reach the start of the route. We begin moving on a short rope, following a distinctive gully with easy climbing and a few steeper sections. We then reach a large slab, which we traverse to the left. It is hard to believe how perfect the rock is at this grade. Two enjoyable pitches at UIAA grade III lead into another gully, which takes us directly to the summit ridge and finally to the summit of the Große Fermeda. The descent follows the ascent route and combines downclimbing with abseiling. We then return to the valley either on foot or by cable car. As a personal recommendation, I can highly recommend staying at the La Rives Apartments in St. Christina.

Equipment
You can find all the important information in my equipment list for guided climbing tours. If you need any rental equipment, I can provide it.
Climbing shoes are not required for this tour. Thanks to the excellent holds on the Dolomite rock, even the pitches at UIAA grade III can be climbed comfortably in approach shoes.
