Overview

The west ridge of the Gimpel in the beautiful Tannheim Valley is the perfect choice for anyone wishing to discover alpine climbing with an experienced mountain guide. This varied route is also suitable for mountain enthusiasts with no previous rock-climbing experience. With around 200 metres of climbing spread over seven pitches, the Gimpel West Ridge offers enjoyable climbing up to the upper third grade. One short, steeper section can easily be overcome using the fixed pitons for aid climbing at A0. A particular advantage of this route is that it contains no difficult traverses, allowing me to coach and support you closely throughout the climb. This makes it ideal for beginners and recreational climbers. The descent follows the Gimpel’s normal route, while the approach and return via the welcoming Gimpelhaus complete a wonderful day in the mountains. Whether it is your first alpine climb or a practice tour between more demanding objectives, climbing the Gimpel West Ridge with a mountain guide is an unforgettable experience.

Tour Programme

We meet in the morning at the Gimpelhaus car park in Nesselwängle in the Tannheim Valley. After a brief equipment check, we begin the hike to the Gimpelhaus, reaching the hut after approximately one hour and taking the opportunity for a short break. The approach to the start of the Gimpel West Ridge takes another hour and leads to the “Judenscharte” col between the Rote Flüh and the Gimpel. At the foot of the route, we put on the rope and discuss all the important details of the climb ahead. The route begins with two pitches through stepped terrain along the distinctive ridge, followed by a short gully and one pitch at upper UIAA grade III. We then reach the key section, known as the “Johann”: a slightly overhanging step around two metres high that can be climbed using a foot sling or A0 aid if necessary. Once the Johann has been completed, two more beautiful pitches at grade III lead to easier terrain and finally to the summit of the Gimpel. After a well-earned summit break, we descend via the normal route, pass beneath the Gimpel’s south face and return to the Gimpelhaus before continuing comfortably back into the valley.
