Overview
The Freispitze, with its mighty south face in the heart of the Lechtal Alps, is a true climbing gem. At its highest point, the wall rises almost 500 metres — a vertical sea of excellent limestone. The routes are traditional alpine climbs with elegant lines and mostly natural protection. The great classic is the “Schreck-Heel” route. Once the demanding second pitch, graded UIAA 7-, has been completed— it can also be climbed with A0 aid or some assistance from the rope — you can look forward to enjoyable climbing in the upper fourth and lower fifth grades. The alpine descent and the atmosphere of this remote setting make the tour an exceptional experience. Even with support from an e-bike or car, climbing the Freispitze’s south face as a day tour makes for a long and demanding day. I therefore also offer it as a two-day tour, including a bivouac at the foot of the wall.

Tour Requirements

For this tour, you need a good level of fitness and should be confident climbing lower UIAA grade VI on rock as the second climber.
You should already have completed a few shorter climbing tours at this level, either with or without a mountain guide. You also need to be sure-footed, comfortable with exposure and confident moving through loose terrain during the descent.

Tour Programme
As a day tour:
We meet early in the morning in Bach in the Lechtal Valley. From there, we cycle into the Madautal Valley and leave our bikes at the Memminger Hütte car park. We then begin the three-hour approach to the foot of the route. The scenic hike is an experience in itself, taking us past the Schafgufel as the impressive wall gradually draws closer. The climbing begins on excellent rock, with water-worn grooves and slab climbing alternating with steeper sections featuring excellent holds. At the end of the route, we traverse above the wall and make two abseils into the col between the Freispitze and Heelzapfen. The descent from the col back to the foot of the wall requires full concentration once again.
As a two-day tour:
We meet in Bach in the early afternoon on the first day and hike to the foot of the wall, where we find a suitable place to bivouac. The rest of the tour follows the same itinerary.
