Fleischbank East Face – Dülfer Route

Overview
The east face of the Fleischbank has fascinated climbers for generations, including one of the great pioneers of climbing history, Hans Dülfer. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he made the first ascent of this steep wall, discovering one of the most elegant climbing lines I know. Steep cracks, exposed traverses, corners and smooth slabs—this route has it all. It is never truly easy, but never extremely difficult either. This climb is an absolute must for every alpinist. The approach and descent, including several abseils, complete the experience perfectly. Arriving the day before the tour is recommended. Good accommodation is available at the Gaudeamushütte or the Wochenbrunner Alm. The route is also an ideal choice as part of a climbing week in the Wilder Kaiser.

You should feel comfortable climbing upper UIAA grade V as the second climber and be solid at this level.
You need enough stamina for a long day of climbing, including a two-hour approach and descent. The most difficult sections can also be climbed with A0 aid using the fixed pitons. When climbed free, the route reaches UIAA grade VI.

Tour Programme
Depending on our starting point and the time of year, we begin either at the Wochenbrunner Alm or on the opposite side of the Wilder Kaiser in the Kaiserbachtal Valley. From either starting point, we hike up into the Steinerne Rinne and continue to the start of the route. Around twelve pitches lead through the east face of the Fleischbank. Shortly below the summit, the route finishes on the Fleischbank North Ridge, which we follow to its end. The descent via the Herrweg, the normal route on the Fleischbank, requires full concentration and includes several abseils. Every great climbing day naturally ends with the descent into the valley—and preferably a cold beer at a mountain hut.
