Overview
The Schlern, the Burgstallkante and the Santner and Euringer peaks high above the Seiser Alm are among the great landmarks of the Dolomites and a must for keen climbers. Despite their beauty and excellent rock, these routes attract far fewer climbers than the famous tours around the Sella Pass or the Tre Cime. The Burgstallkante offers sustained climbing in the fourth and lower fifth grades. Steep, well-featured sections on almost consistently solid rock make this route especially enjoyable. One remarkable feature is that every belay stance is comfortable and offers fantastic views. The long descent via the Touristensteig makes the tour an extended and demanding undertaking. Because of its length, an overnight stay at the Schlernbödele Hut is recommended, allowing the tour to be completed over two days. It is also an excellent option as part of a climbing week in the Dolomites. The approach to the hut can easily be used as a rest day or combined with a shorter tour.

For this tour, you need a good level of fitness and should be confident climbing UIAA grade V on rock as the second climber.
You should already have some experience in sport climbing and indoor climbing, as well as having completed a few easier climbing tours with or without a mountain guide. You also need to be sure-footed on the partly loose terrain encountered during the approach.

Tour Programme
Our tour may begin with travelling together to South Tyrol. On the first day, we hike from Seis to the Schlernbödele Hut in around two hours and enjoy a relaxed evening there. We set off early the following morning, initially following a hunters’ trail before continuing through a streambed without a marked path to reach the start of the route. The climb begins with easy terrain at UIAA grades II to III, partly interspersed with grass, before reaching the steeper section of the ridge. Ten pitches of excellent rock then follow at UIAA grade IV and lower grade V, leading from one spectacular viewpoint to the next. The key section is a short overhang that can also be climbed using aid if necessary—and there is a small surprise waiting here. Once this passage has been completed, three more beautiful pitches at grade IV lead to the top of the route. The descent takes us across the Schlern plateau and down the Touristensteig to the Schlernbödele Hut and finally back to the car. It is a long descent, but technically straightforward.
