Overview
The east ridge of the Wilde Leck is a moderately long ridge climb with difficulties up to lower UIAA grade IV and several exposed sections. A long approach and descent, together with a small glacier crossing, make this a complete alpine tour. The Wilde Leck is located in the Stubai Alps. The best option is to spend the night at the Amberger Hut, which we can reach by e-bike from Gries, a village near Längenfeld in the Ötztal Valley. Very fit mountaineers can also complete the tour in a single day with the support of a mountain bike or e-bike.

For this tour, you need a good level of fitness for a total tour duration of up to 11 hours. You should also be able to move confidently across boulder fields and through easy climbing terrain.
Experience using crampons is not essential but may be helpful depending on the conditions. You should be confident climbing up to UIAA grade 4-, although most of the route is at grades II and III. The tour involves around 1200 vertical metres and takes approximately eleven hours.

Tour Programme
Day 1 begins with a relaxed approach to the Amberger Hut, either on foot or with the support of an e-bike. We enjoy dinner at the hut and prepare for the tour ahead. Early on Day 2, we begin the long approach to the remains of the Sulztalferner glacier. The route follows an impressive moraine to the beginning of the glacier. Depending on the time of year, crampons may be required for the ascent to the ridge. Easy blocky terrain leads to the shoulder of the east ridge, where varied climbing begins. The route follows solid blocks to a distinctive tower, which can either be bypassed or climbed directly—the more rewarding option—followed by a short abseil on the far side. The climbing becomes increasingly enjoyable as we approach the summit, where we are rewarded with magnificent views of the Stubai and Ötztal Alps. The descent along the partly loose south ridge demands full concentration once again. We then return to the Amberger Hut and continue down into the valley. Very fit mountaineers can also complete the route as a day tour with e-bike support. The price remains unchanged when the route is completed in a single day.
