Overview
The Thaneller, above Heiterwang in the Tyrolean Zwischentoren region, is one of the most striking mountains in the area. While in summer the ascent from Berwang is a rewarding hike and the approach from Heiterwang via the Rietzlersteig offers a varied mountain tour, in winter the north side of the Thaneller turns into a true playground and ideal training ground for winter mountaineering and north face climbing. With around 1,400 metres of elevation gain, climbing sections up to grade three, steep firn and snow passages, and short ice steps, the face is a real alpine challenge in every respect. It offers countless possibilities to choose a more or less demanding line to the summit — individually adapted to the current conditions. And best of all: at this time of year, you often have the mountain almost entirely to yourself. The tour can also be perfectly integrated into a multi-day winter mountaineering programme. With the Rubihorn North Face, the Geierkopf North Face, or a winter ascent of the Eisenzeit on the Zugspitze, the surrounding region offers many additional and more demanding options.

Tour Programme
We meet early in the morning at the Karlift car park in Heiterwang and begin the approach into the Thanellerkar — first along a forest road, then further along a trail. At the tree line, the Thanellerkar opens up and we continue our ascent.
This is where the climbing begins, alternating with walking passages. We choose the line flexibly, adapting it to the current conditions and in a way that allows you to gain as much as possible from the tour. Roughly, we follow the line of the Rietzlersteig.
About halfway up the face, there is the option to ascend directly to the summit via the so-called “Gipfelrinne”, which is also a demanding ski descent in winter. Alternatively, we stay further left in more rocky terrain.
From the summit, we descend southwards to Berwang or Rinnen and round off the tour with a relaxed beer. Afterwards, we return to the starting point in Heiterwang by public transport.
Meeting Point
Start: 06:00 - Karlift
End: 17:00 - Karlift
The stated meeting point, start time, and end time should be understood as an initial suggestion. Before the tour, we will coordinate individually and adapt everything to the current conditions — and, whenever possible, arrange to travel together.
