About this tour

The Gelber Fluss in the Kaunertal often forms early in the season and offers steep climbing. This natural icefall is located in a disused quarry. With each pitch, you climb one level higher through the former quarry. The advantages of this tour are the comfortable belay stances and the short approach. Right next to the Gelber Fluss, another icefall often forms, offering beautiful and steep climbing in a corner system. This makes it an ideal location for a full day with plenty of metres climbed on ice.

Itinerary

The day begins with the journey to the Kaunertal. After the short approach to the Gelber Fluss, we start climbing the icefall. Depending on your wishes and fitness level, there may also be the option to climb a second route in the neighbouring corner system. It is possible to abseil after each pitch.

Requirements

Depending on the conditions, the difficulty of the icefall is around WI4 to WI4+.

For this tour, you should already have gained ice climbing experience on easier or less steep icefalls, or in an ice park. Despite the overall moderate level, the climbing is too sustained and too steep to be suitable as a beginner tour.
